Beach-goers Checklist

Summer is in full-swing here in Michigan! One thing Michiganders love to do during these summer months is spend time on one of our gorgeous lakes. Before you pack-up and drive out to your local beach, make sure you’ve packed these essential items:

Sunscreen — One of the best things to do at the lakes is soak up the sun on the beach, but the sun’s UVA and UVB rays are harmful to our skin. So this summer, always bring a bottle of sunscreen that is at least SPF 15+ to protect your skin.

Sunglasses — Just like you should apply sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation, you should also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s rays.

A Cover-up — Not only will a cover-up provide extra protection to your shoulders, back, and chest, it will also give you something comfortable to wear after being in the water (no one likes putting shorts on over a wet swimsuit).

Beach towel or Chair — While there’s nothing quite like sticking your toes in the sand, it’s not necessarily the greatest thing to sit in it all day long. Pack a thick beach towel or camping chair to relax on and keep the sand out of your clothes and swimsuit.

Beach Umbrellas — Prop a beach umbrella in the sand and lay your towel out underneath it for a stylish and shady retreat from the sun. The extra shade provided by an umbrella will give you and your family total body-coverage from the sun’s harmful rays (though not complete total-body coverage, which is why you should still apply sunscreen).

Cooler — When you’re on the beach, having fun in the sun, time can get away from you. That’s why it’s important to bring a cooler filled with ice that contains bottles of water and snacks to keep everyone hydrated and energized.

Beach Toys — Sitting on the beach and swimming in the lake is fun, but that can get a bit boring after a while. Beach toys like buckets and shovels, a beach ball or volleyball, snorkel gear, etc. provide hours of varied entertainment for people of all ages!

Floaties — Whether it’s little arm floaties to help young ones stay afloat or big floaties for adults to lounge on in the water, floaties are a must for fun in the lake!

A Good Book — There’s nothing quite like a good book on the beach for when you just need to relax and get away.

And of course, make sure your phone is fully-charged before you leave for the beach. If you think there’s a chance of your phone getting wet, bring a ziplock bag to protect it from water damage.
