5 Things To Do Before You Pack

5 Things To Do Before You Pack

Congratulations on completing the paperwork for your new home! Now comes the hard part: packing. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with these five easy tips to make the transition as smooth as possible:

Set Realistic Goals — Give yourself a daily quota of boxes to pack to avoid the stress of packing up your entire home in one weekend.

Forget the cardboard boxes — Why spend precious time and money on cardboard boxes, packing tape, and box cutters that you’ll (most likely) only use once? Many moving companies, like U-Haul, now offer plastic moving box rentals which are cheaper, sturdier, more eco-friendly than cardboard boxes. You simply rent the boxes you want and return them when you’re done.

Invest in a Wardrobe Box — Wardrobe boxes function like portable closets, you can leave your clothes on their hangers during transport. If you hired a professional mover, you can ask them to bring a wardrobe box when you move. If you are moving yourself, you can find wardrobe boxes at your local hardware store for about $15-$20.

Call your utility company and switch your service — Once you have a closing date, it is important to set up a service switch with your utility company before you move. This is especially important if you are moving into a newly built home.

Deal with the basics first — If you’re within driving distance of your new home, it may be a good idea to take basic necessities and supplies over before the “big day.” Already having bathroom supplies, pjs, and some outfits out for the next few days will bring some calm to the chaos of unpacking.
